Pedro Álvarez Miranda (1903–1990) was a Spanish artist hailing from Oviedo. While professionally renowned as a master jeweler and designer who led one of the region’s most prestigious jewelry firms, he cultivated a parallel and prolific career as a watercolorist. His painting style is deeply rooted in the landscape tradition of Northern Spain, characterized by an atmospheric sensitivity that captures the humid, misty climate of the Asturian geography. Álvarez Miranda’s watercolors utilize soft washes and a muted, earthy palette to evoke the silent, verdant valleys and estuaries of his homeland.
Pedro Álvarez Miranda occupies a unique space in Asturian cultural history. While his legacy as a designer is preserved in the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias (which acquired his drawings and jewelry designs), his watercolors are treasured in private collections for their honest and emotive portrayal of the region. His landscapes, often featuring the Picos de Europa or coastal towns like Llanes, are considered quintessential examples of mid-20th-century Asturian costumbrismo.
