In Moored Boats, Isle of Arran, Fraser captures the volatile atmosphere of the Scottish islands. The composition features two leisure sailboats anchored in calm, reflective waters, their masts creating delicate vertical lines against the horizon. Behind them, situated on a spit of land, stands the dark, jagged silhouette of a ruin, almost certainly Lochranza Castle, a landmark located on the northern tip of the Isle of Arran. Above this tranquil foreground looms a massive, turbulent sky rendered in shades of teal, slate grey, and bruised purple, contrasting with the dry, precise strokes used for the birds and rigging.

Executed in 1991, during the artist’s mature period, the painting focuses on the effect of “broken light”, the moment when the sun bursts through heavy storm clouds. Fraser achieves this by leaving the white of the paper untouched in the center of the sky and on the water’s surface, creating a luminous glow amidst the dark washes.
