Manuel Tosar Granados (1945) was born in Rota, Cádiz, Spain. From a young age, he showed an interest in drawing, which served as his means of expression during his introverted childhood. Tosar faced significant personal challenges early in life, including the loss of his father when he was just a few months old. With the support of his hometown’s council, he moved to Seville at the age of 15 to study at the prestigious Superior School of Fine Arts, Santa Isabel de Hungary. Despite his physical disability, which could have limited his options, Tosar’s passion for art and perseverance led him to pursue a career as an artist.
His artistic career spans several decades, marked by a deep dedication to capturing light and color. His work reflects a strong connection to his Andalusian roots, particularly through his use of whites to express the vibrancy of southern Spain’s light, and his exploration of darker tones from his time in the Sahara. Influenced by his travels, Tosar also incorporated scenes from the desert and figures reminiscent of Sorolla’s work, with depictions of clergy and women in distinctively colorful settings. Throughout the 1960s, he began with portraits and later transitioned to larger-scale works that gained attention in various art circles. His approach to painting, described as “the painter of light,” made a significant mark in the art world.
Tosar’s works have been exhibited in over 50 group exhibitions in Spain, Portugal, and the United States. Notable milestones in his career include exhibitions in New York and Japan, where his works found a place in the collections of notable figures like Steven Spielberg, Adolfo Suárez, and Karl Reinosh. He has also been part of the art scene in prestigious galleries in Madrid and other major cities. His art has not only been praised by critics but also inspired poets and fellow artists. Although Tosar is content with his legacy, he has expressed that the true satisfaction in his career comes not just from achieving recognition but from staying true to his craft and continuing to create.
