Achille Jacques Jean Marie Devéria (1800–1857) was a celebrated French painter and lithographer, a central figure of the Romantic movement in Paris. While best known for his portraits of literary giants like Victor Hugo and his genre scenes, he also contributed to the tradition of reproductive engraving. In this ink engraving on paper, Devéria acts as a translator, skillfully converting the color and monumental forms of the Italian Renaissance into the monochromatic language of print.
