Josep Cruañas (1942) was born in Maià de Montcal, a small village in the La Garrotxa region of Girona, Spain. From a young age, he developed an interest in art, beginning his artistic education at 15 by attending drawing classes at the Art School of Banyoles under the guidance of Joan de Palau. At 18, he furthered his artistic development by studying with the painter Joan Sibecas in Figueres, who played a crucial role in shaping his approach to painting.
He moved to Barcelona in 1961, where he pursued painting classes at the Reial Cercle Artístic and Sant Lluc. Though considered largely self-taught, his exposure to various art studios and his work as a graphic designer deeply influenced his approach to painting. Over the years, he explored various art movements, including abstraction, surrealism, and expressionism, before settling into a personal style of impressionism with abstract nuances in the 1980s. His work, often focused on urban landscapes, reveals a deep fascination with light, atmosphere, and the often-overlooked details of everyday scenes. His travels across Europe, especially his early impressions of northern landscapes, shaped his unique perspective on color and light.
Cruañas has participated in over a hundred individual and group exhibitions, both in Spain and internationally, with works displayed in South Africa, Uruguay, Cuba, the United States, and more. His paintings can be found in prominent museums such as the Museum of the Diputación de Barcelona, the Girona museums of Banyoles, Tossa de Mar, and Palamós, and even the National Museum of Bulgaria. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the XVIII International Award of Rapid Painting in Tossa de Mar in 1974 and the “Francisca Salva” Prize in Palamós in 1982. In 1993, a book documenting his artistic career was published, and in 1994, he was honored with the title of “Illustrious Son” by his hometown of Maià de Montcal. His work continues to be celebrated for its atmospheric quality, vibrant color contrasts, and evocative depictions of both urban and rural landscapes.
