Julia Hidalgo Quejo (1948) is a Spanish artist and painter, considered one of the most prominent contemporary creators in Andalusia. Born into a military and agricultural family, Hidalgo began her artistic training at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios Mateo Inurria in Córdoba, where she received her first drawing lessons. She later continued her studies at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes in Seville and the University of Barcelona, where she obtained a degree in Fine Arts. Additionally, she studied Interior Architecture at ICADE in Madrid and earned a master’s degree in Didactics of Plastic Expression from the University of Córdoba, further complementing her education with studies at the Ratti Foundation in Italy under Emil Schumacher and Gerhard Richter.
Throughout her career, she has developed an eclectic body of work that spans various techniques and styles, from figuration and surrealism to informalism and postcubism. She has exhibited extensively, participating in numerous collective exhibitions in Spain and abroad, as well as holding 34 solo exhibitions. Her style is characterized by experimentation with materials and colors, working on diverse surfaces such as canvas, paper, and wood. Through her art, Hidalgo explores the fusion of techniques and avant-garde movements with a strong emotional component that connects with her cultural and personal environment.
Julia Hidalgo’s work is represented in numerous museums and international collections, such as the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts and the Bullfighting Museum of Córdoba, as well as collections in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Japan, and other countries. She has received several awards, including the First Prize from Caja de Jerez (1978), the Caja Madrid Painting Prize (1993), and the Lady’s Medal of the Order of the Silver Anchor in 2007. Additionally, her work was featured in important events such as the 2007 Córdoba Fair poster. Her contribution to contemporary Andalusian art has been celebrated through exhibitions and awards that highlight her impact both in painting and art education.
