Roberto Liang (1942) was born in Ch’eng-tu, Szechwan province, China, and grew up in Taiwan. His family is originally from Shantung province. At the age of twelve, he won second prize in an international children’s painting contest, which sparked his interest in painting. Although he initially pursued a technical education in dyeing and worked as an assistant engineer in a textile factory, his passion for art grew stronger over time. After applying for a scholarship, Liang moved to Spain to study painting, where he faced challenges such as language barriers and adjusting to a new art education system.
His artistic career blossomed after his move to Spain, where he attended the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, earning a spot among the 23 successful candidates out of 660 applicants. He spent his early years in Spain living frugally and experimenting with different painting styles, searching for a personal approach that would deeply resonate with viewers. Over time, his work evolved from surrealism to a more spiritual and harmonious style, often incorporating elements of nature and human forms. He created paintings that transcended reality, using meticulous techniques to build layers of paint, creating dreamy and tranquil scenes that conveyed a sense of quiet and peacefulness.
The artist’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, both in Spain and Taiwan, and has garnered critical acclaim for its unique style. He has continuously refined his craft and has become a well-respected figure in contemporary art. Although he has not focused heavily on commercial sales, Liang’s dedication to his craft and his exploration of personal and spiritual themes in his work has led to a growing international recognition. Through his persistent effort and passion for art, he continues to strive toward his ambition of becoming a world-class painter, with his paintings captivating audiences around the globe.
