CURATORs STATEMENT

GAIA is conceived as an intimate meditation on origins, perception, and the search for perspective and happiness through an attentive contemplation of nature and its subtleties—its colours, forms, movements, and the cyclical processes within which we all coexist, yet so often take for granted.

This quiet disregard for the profound subtle splendour of the natural world—especially in the modern age—gives rise, we believe, to a deep and pervasive sense of disconnection, and ultimately, to unhappiness.

Presented within the organic spaces of the 5 Monchique Resort & SPA, amidst its inspiring natural setting, MadameFlihan Art Gallery invites visitors to experience the exhibition as a reflective journey: from the primordial spark of LIFE to the presence of humanity and the ways in which we observe, learn from, and ultimately intervene in the natural world.

The path begins with works that symbolise the first burst of creation—the moment at which everything comes into being and life begins to unfold. From there, human figures appear, offering a quiet yet powerful teaching: that only by contemplating living nature in silence can we recover a true sense of perspective, while allowing its ever-surprising beauty to reveal itself through attentive observation-

Ángel Jurado’s floating Grapes & Roses invite the viewer to pause and contemplate the living detail—nature not as “still life,” but as fully alive, in vibrant bloom. Suspended in the air, they are liberated from human intervention and reveal the essential vitality of the natural world when it manifests on its own terms. Only through a slow, deliberate gaze may the spectator rediscover the very act of looking—the way the artist once observed the subject of the work—transforming it into a source of continuous wonder, and thus of quiet happiness born from sustained contemplation of details while gaining perspective.

The journey concludes with works that reveal the moment when the human hand enters the scene and transforms nature with the desire to preserve its beauty ad aeternum—a gesture of holding onto what was once a purely organic, unmediated process, in a longing for permanence and happiness.

GAIA proposes a reflection on life as a silent form of learning, nurtured through attentive and meditative observation. Here, nature emerges as a teacher—in its rhythms, its forms, and its intricate beauty. By slowing down, looking closely, and inhabiting these details, a deeper perspective arises, echoing the Japanese concept of shizen: a vision that embraces effortless creation, spontaneity, and the harmonious integration of human presence within the natural world. Rooted in traditions of contemplation, this philosophy invites us to find beauty in simplicity and organic flow, revealing itself anew each time we approach it with a mindful, receptive gaze. Those who linger, who return to look again, often find that the work begins to shift subtly, offering new details, new harmonies, almost as if responding to the rhythm of the observer. In that gentle reciprocity, a quiet happiness arises.

GAIA invites us to recover the essence of Life: to walk through nature without distancing ourselves from it, to observe without urgency, and to rediscover—in the repeated act of looking these pieces—the clarity and quiet joy that only deep contemplation of beauty can reveal.

in focus: Ángel jurado

Ángel Jurado (1944) is a Spanish contemporary artist known for his exploration of abstraction and his ability to convey the essence of nature through oil painting. Over the years, he has made significant contributions to the Spanish art scene, using abstraction as a means of evoking emotional response and introspection.
His work draws from nature and everyday subjects, blending realism and abstraction to create a distinctive visual language rich in nuance and depth. Through this balance, Jurado articulates a personal meditation on time, fragility, and the emotional resonance of the natural world.

In the suspended fruits and blossoms of the series here presented, Grapes & Roses, nature is presented not as an object, but as a living presence, vital, impermanent, and quietly profound. These floating compositions invite a way of seeing rooted in attention and humility, where contemplation becomes a path to clarity and perspective.

Ángel Jurado’s work has been exhibited in numerous important galleries and museums in Spain and internationally, including the Galería de Arte Moderno in Barcelona, the Centro de Arte Moderna, and the Museum of Abstract Art. His capacity to evoke emotion and contemplative reflection has established him as a significant figure in contemporary Spanish abstraction.

Grapes & Roses, presented here at the 5★ Monchique Resort & SPA, reflects a deep sensitivity to the quiet intelligence of the natural world. The series forms part of an itinerant exhibition programme rooted in MadameFlihan Art Gallery, offering an intimate glimpse into the broader exhibitions developed at our gallery in Lagoa–Carvoeiro. This presentation also inaugurates a series of permanent pop-up exhibitions in this exceptional location, conceived in continuous dialogue with the curatorial practice of MadameFlihan Art Gallery.
