Highland Atmosphere
In Highland Atmosphere Todd leans heavily into the Romantic tradition of landscape painting. The horizon line is low, emphasizing the scale of the natural environment against the viewer. Todd employs a tonalist palette of sepias, deep umbers, and muted ochres.
The application of the paint is washed and hazy, creating a “sfumato” effect that obscures specific details in favor of a general sense of weather and light. The lower section features dark, sweeping brushstrokes that suggest a rugged moorland or heath. A faint, light-reflecting path or stream winds through the darkness, leading the eye toward the misty horizon. This work captures the raw, untamed spirit of the open country, a theme central to his later projects.
