Tauromaquia (The Red Cape)
In this striking limited edition print The Red Cape (numbered 34/168 of the Tauromaquia series), Barjola captures the climactic moment of the faena, the final stage of the bullfight. The painting is anchored by the swirling, architectural form of the red cape (muleta).
Rendered in deep crimsons and pinks, the cape serves as the visual bridge connecting the dark mass of the bull on the left, and the tension-filled figure of the matador on the right. The scene is set against a saturated, fiery background of ochres and oranges, evoking the intense heat and the sandy floor of the bullring (albero).
In his graphic oeuvre, such as this ink engraving, he translates the ferocity of his oil paintings into print. He uses sweeping, gestural lines and solid blocks of vibrant color to capture movement and tension, following the legacy of masters like Goya and Picasso in his approach to the Tauromaquia (Bullfighting) theme, viewing it not as folklore, but as a tragic, primal ritual.
