The Royal Entry

In this artwork Menéndez transports the viewer to a festive medieval scene. The foreground is commanded by a group of heralds blowing long golden trumpets, announcing the arrival of a noble retinue. Behind them, elegant figures dressed in luxurious period garments, deep blues, emerald greens, and crimsons, ride upon white horses adorned with ceremonial tack.

The cavalcade moves through a stylized landscape. A dense line of trees separates the figures from the background, where a magnificent castle with slate-roofed towers rises against a bright, cloud-dappled sky, evoking the chivalric romances of the Middle Ages. The lighting is even and bright, emphasizing the textures of the velvet robes and the pageantry of the event.
