Gunnar Stenberg

Gunnar Stenberg is a Swedish painter born in Helsingborg. He studied at the Skånska Målarskolan (Skånska Art College) and continued his artistic training in Europe. Active during the mid-20th century, he is recognized for his evocative interpretations of the Scandinavian landscape. His work is represented in public collections, including Folkets Hus in Gothenburg, and he frequently exhibited in Gothenburg and Halmstad, often alongside his contemporary Louis Zelig.

Stenberg worked in both oil and watercolour, painting romantically influenced landscapes, often coastal views from the Kullabygden area, preferably at dusk. He developed a painterly language that blends direct observation with an expressive, almost restless handling of paint. Influenced by his travels across Europe and the United States, he moved beyond simple representation to capture the very “temperature” of a scene, the bite of the wind, the salt-laden air, and the raw motion of the sea.

Through bold colour contrasts and vigorous textures, he created immersive atmospheres that evoke the solitude and elemental power of the coastline, a recurring theme throughout his exhibitions. Today, his work is valued for its confident mid-century aesthetic and its ability to bring the unpolished, spirited beauty of the Scandinavian landscape into interior spaces with both strength and sensitivity.
