Sunset on the Coast
In Sunset on the Coast, the viewer is confronted with the elemental power of the sea. The sky is a dramatic canopy of burning orange and rust, streaked with clouds that suggest a clearing storm or the intense, fleeing glow of a Nordic sunset. Below, the ocean is churned up, rendered in physical strokes of teal, slate blue, and white. Stenberg allows the warm brown tone of the board to peek through the breaking waves, creating a visual link between the cold water and the sky above.
This work exemplifies Stenberg’s ability to create atmosphere through bold color contrast and vigorous texture. It evokes the solitude of the coastline, a recurrent theme in his exhibitions held in cities like Gothenburg and Halmstad, often alongside his contemporary Louis Zelig.
