Is VAT included in the price of artworks?

According to current Portuguese law, all sales of artworks—whether by living or deceased artists—are subject to the standard VAT rate of 23%. This applies regardless of the sales channel, including gallery sales and online purchases.

Currently, there are no exemptions or reduced rates for art sales in Portugal.

For more detailed information on VAT in Portugal, please consult the official Portuguese Tax Authority website,  https://info.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt/pt/informacao_fiscal/codigos_tributarios/civa_rep/Pages/codigo-do-iva-indice.aspx?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Please note: VAT rules are different for artworks purchased through our auctions on madameflihan.com. All auction transactions are legally placed in Spain, managed by Proyectos e Inmovilizados S.L. (MRFLYHART), and are subject to Spanish VAT law.
